| Abstract: | This dissertation, through a theoretical elaboration, aims to understand the role of iconicity in hypnotic communication, especially its participation in the reconfiguration of experiences and the way that presents itself in the hypnotic techniques of Milton Erickson. Starting from the concept of iconicity, the signs capacity to transmit it’s objects qualities, it’s emphasized how it can clarify the way that hypnotic communication favors reconfigurations of experience and the specificities of the communicative processes of Milton Erickson’s techniques. The work was divided in a chapter of theoretical foundation where concepts important to the fields of semiotics and hypnosis are detailed; a chapter of approximations and theoretical implications in which are drawn relations between the thought of Charles Peirce and Milton Erickson and the implications that his studies bring to the questions of hypnotic induction and the way of thinking consciousness; three chapters which contain case studies of Milton Erickson are followed by clinical discussions and approximations between the hypnotic techniques at the phenomenological levels of experience and corresponding semiotic productions, focusing on aspects of iconicity; and final considerations, where general reflections about the study’s themes were developed, emphasizing the characteristics in terms of iconicity, hypnotic technique and reconfiguration of the experience, as well as possible contributions regarding the dichotomy between patterns and symbolic processes. As such, the theoretical foundation presented the phenomenological bases of Peirce, his concepts of sign and semiosis, the relation between signs and their elements and the notion of iconicity that arises from his work. In relation to hypnosis, it described Milton Erickson's trajectory, his clinical principles with emphasis on utilization, a brief description of major techniques, and the hypnotic phenomena that they are capable of eliciting. The chapter on approximations and theoretical implications demonstrates the pragmatic thinking and phenomenological appreciation that permeates the work of both, and the possible motives for such different ways of spreading their knowledge. It also elaborates on the predominance of a First dimension in the trance experience and how it differs from the waking state, the iconic and rhetorical content of Milton Erickson's indirect communication, and new possibilities for hypnotic induction. In the chapter of iconicity in the interpersal technique it describes how the technique creates a symbolic regularity next to the laws of functioning of the subject and inserts signs capable of altering the current forms of actuation. In the case of chapter 4, storytelling has demonstrated a great capacity for allegorical communication, even while performing other functions related to the maintenance and potentialization of suggestions. The latter case study characterizes drama as a form of metaphorical or allegorical communication that, through the dramatic role, influences the interpretation processes of the subject. The final considerations highlight how the iconicity of hypnotic communication, in all the cases presented, elicits in the subject icons that constitute new forms of configuration, and how this perspective escapes reifications surrounding patterns and meaning production. |
