Abstract:	This dissertation explores the strategies the Tentehar Indians in the state of Maranhão deploy in their interethnic relationships with both Whites and other Indians. It begins with native categories such as irairakatu, meaning ‘good at doing things,’ ‘talented,’ ‘willing,’ or ‘skilled,’ and ukwaw katu, ‘he who knows, is wise ’or‘ he who has accrued great knowledge.’ It proceeds to analyse the notion of sagacity, cunning or shrewdness, a pervading feature in Tentehar life. Context defines the application of this category, which greatly enlarges the range of meanings around the ability to be shrewd. Thus, iIrairakatu and ukaw katu can unfold into many expressions, which, together, comprise a system of thought. Wisdom belongs to a tradition of constant interpreting that does not follow a set plan. It manifests itself as pieces of acquired knowledge, which operates surreptitiously as a setting to organize a person’s moral values regarding other people. In sum, it represents the group’s ethos. The Tentehar use this cunning ethos in their strategies in relating to Whites and to other Indians. To confirm this hypothesis, I provide a number of ethnographic examples. Tentehar sagacity appears in both small events of daily life and in tactic movements in interethnic contexts. It expresses itself as “the art of doing”, in Certeau’s terms, but not only. It is present in broader, intertwined contexts that require knowledge and strategic planning. I am referring to a way of being and doing that, although not exclusive to the Tentenhar, for other indigenous peoples display similar features, has gone unnoticed by other ethnologists.
