Abstract:	Capoeira has been read as part of a so-called “male universe”. However, its genesis is linked to the processes of resistence of black women and men in the diasporic context in Brazil. Capoeira has been elaborated and re-elaborated historically, and the intersection of race, class and gender conflicts are the basis for the production of survival strategies in physical and spiritual terms. Racialisation and the engendering of bodies are two articulated axes of the coloniality of power. Neglecting this perspective compromises the analysis of this Afro-Brazilian cultural expression. Two primary points for the rewriting of the history of Capoeira: the categories introduced by modern, colonial and Eurocentric rationality, constituted in binary and hierarchical oppositions, are inadequate to reach the meanings produced by their historical agents; black women exist as active subjects in the relations that occur in colonialism and coloniality, so, their absence (or peripheral and pre-fixed presence) in the traditional and historiographic narratives is strange. This thesis offers a re-reading of a part of the long history of Capoeira. It makes an intersectional analysis of gender and race demonstrating the erasure of black women in those productions. The focus was given to those produced from the conceptual and organizational turn of Capoeira in the 1930s, after its decriminalization, and which are based on the period of persecution of black customs in the city of San Salvador between 1900 and 1920. The thesis presents documentation that shows hundreds of women starring in the context of urban violence, which is linked to capoeiragem and commonly called the masculine universe.
