Abstract:	This dissertation analyses the modifications in the ways of communal use of the varjões (lowlands) of the Araguaia River, territory of the Retireiros and Retireiras (cattle withdrawers) of Araguaia: The socioterritorial changes occurred from 2003, the conflicts risen from the expansion/invasion of the large real estate property through illegal means, the fences as symbol of these changes, highlighting the year of 2013 in which occurred the hardest conflict with the community. It also approaches the process of identity self-awareness of the Retireiras and Retireiros of Araguaia, strengthened in the context of attack, threats, usurpation and expropriation of the traditional territory of Mato Verdinho. These are political identities of resistance, awakened and strengthened in the search for socioterritorial defense strategies. To get empirical information, it was used a participative, activist and committed research following reunions, conversation circles and participative observation with the carreiros/tireiros, composed by people and cattle, through the territory. From the analytical perspective on the socioterritorial conflict igniters, and the stimulators of the abandonment of the communal and traditional practices, its seen as research results the land concentration, having the fences as distinctive element, the rural real estate speculation as assurance of bank loans, the suppression of the green economy, the advance of the agribusiness and the resignation of some Retireiros to the coexistence agreement. The historical unequal distribution and access to land in the region of mid-Araguaia – MT are intensifiers of conflicts that are heavily tied to the state and political mechanisms that provoke expropriation and invasion of the traditional territories.
