dc.description.abstract1Suicide is any death case that results directly or indirectly from a positive or negative act by the victim himself; the suicide attempt is the act like this defined, but interrupted before it results in death. Between 2002 and 2012, the total of suicides in Brazil increased from 7,726 to 10,321, an increase of 33.6%, above the population growth in the same period (11.1%). The Brazilian Federal District was not far behind the national average, with its growth exceeding 29%. However, these phenomena, which ought to provoke various discussions about their implications, have not so far had their deserved repercussions. In this sense, this study aimed to analyze the occurrences of suicide, as well as its attempts, recorded by the Civil Police of the Brazilian Federal District (PCDF) between 2005 and 2014, in order to ascertain the epidemiological and social determinants of these events occurring in the Brazilian Federal District. The research used the records contained in the official documents issued by the PCDF, namely: Police Bulletins, Reports of Criminal Expertise and Reports of Body of Crime Examination. Among the data collected and analyzed are: date, time, age, sex, skin color, education level, marital status, locality, victim's address, profession, method used for the execution of the suicide, cause of death, among others. We verified the association of suicide with spatial determinants, with the use of alcohol and other drugs, with the socioeconomic-cultural condition. It is hoped that this work will provoke innumerable reflections and constitute a record that may be part of the planning of the public policies of the Brazilian Federal District, specifically with regard to Public Health.pt_BR
