Abstract: Tingui (Magonia pubescens) is a typical fruit of the Brazilian Cerrado and produces a unique natural hydrogel which the main function in the Environment is germination. Hydrogels are polymers swollen by large amounts of water. They may be applied to hygienic products such as disposable diapers, biomedical applications such as contact lenses and drug delivery. The natural gels have the advantages of being biocompatible, biodegradable and non-toxic and, in this paper, the Magonia pubescens hydrogel was purified by oxidative methods and modified with N-N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAAm) to obtain a pure product with physic-chemical properties that make them suitable for different applications. Characterization of the Modified Purified Hydrogel (MPH) was performed by thermal analysis (Thermogravimetry and Differ-ential Scanning Calorimetry) FT-IR spectroscopy, morphological aspects (Scanning Electron Microscopy and Optical Microscopy) and rate of swelling water. The purification method em-ployee was very efficient not been badly to hydrogels absorbency and making a homogeneous and translucent product. After modifying MPH, the rate of swelling one and twice of the hy-drogel was 80 times bigger. From FT-IR spectrocopy and TG / DTG / DSC the cross-linking reaction between MBAAm and Purified Hidrogel (PH) was confirmed by appearance of new amide adsorption bands and thermal stability of the final product. The morphological analysis also showed the fibrous and porous appearance of the material.
