| Abstract: | The onset of ethanol consumption during adolescence is directly related to significant damages to the structure of the brain, since there are extensive and continuous processes of neurological maturation during this period. Exposure to neurotoxins has a significant impact on the central nervous system during adolescence, compared to exposure in adulthood. Studies demonstrate the neurotoxic potential of ethanol during adolescence and point to the occurrence of greater impairment of nervous tissue located in the frontal region of the brain (area correlated, among other functions, with impulsivity) in adolescent rats (25 days) compared to adult rats (60 days), after episodes of excessive ethanol consumption. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of voluntary ethanol consumption during adolescence and adulthood in Wistar rats when in the adult stage in a delay reduction procedure (impulsivity measure). A total of 32 rats were divided into 4 groups: ADC – Adolescent Group; ADT Adult Group; Control Group 1 – Consumption of gelatin without alcohol and Control Group 2 – without consumption of gelatine. After the period of voluntary consumption of alcohol or in the adolescence or adult phase, all subjects on completing 90 days of life were submitted to the delay reduction procedure with adjustment of the amount of reinforcement in the alternative adjustment and with delay (2 sec, 5 sec, 10 sec and 30 sec in the standard alternative. The session consisted of 60 plus trials of a varied number of forced choices. During each session the amount of reinforcement in the adjustment alternative was systematically varied, starting with 100μl and ranging from 5μl to 195μl with immediate release, while the standard alternative, with delay, remained constant (200μl). Sessions occurred 5 times a week and the same condition remained in effect until the average of the choices for the immediate alternative of the last 30 trials of the last 3 consecutive sessions did not experience variation above 10%. The medians of the last 30 trials of the last 3 sessions were used to estimate the points of indifference. The ADL group had an average alcohol consumption of 5.24 g/kg /day compared to 2.02g /kg /day of the ADT group. The results showed a difference between groups for alcohol consumption with p 0.05. The results emphasize a greater predisposition to alcohol abuse in adolescence, compared to adulthood. However, it was not possible to identify a correlation between high consumption during adolescence and increased impulsivity in adulthood. |
