| Abstract: | The objective of this study is to analyze the meanings produced by adolescents, High School students, on Information and Communication Digital Technologies (ICDT) in their relations with these technologies in a Foreign Language teaching and learning formal context. Therefore, our research question is "what are the meanings attributed by the students, digital technology users, on the use of these technologies for the process of Foreign Language teaching and learning in the classroom?" The analysis of the attributed meanings is based on the Cultural-Historical Psychology that defines meaning as a semantic unit, constructed in the social relations and expressed in the discursive act. In the literature review, we describe the use of the ICDT in education from the 1990s in a historical perspective; we define these technologies as mediating tools; and we discuss about adolescents in a world surrounded by the digital technologies. Our specific objectives are: describing how the research participants self-perceive their use of the ICDT in their social practices; investigating the meanings produced by the students for these technologies in their social practices; and investigating the meanings for the digital technologies in the relations that these students establish with the teaching and the learning process. We propose a qualitative-participatory research, based on the culturalhistorical methodological assumptions, with eight English student adolescents of a public language center in Brasília, Brazil. The instruments used for the information construction are class observation, questionnaire, individual interview, group interview, and interaction through whatsapp. The process of information construction was carried out within 16 classes in two months. In the first part of the information analysis, we contextualized the self-perceived use of the ICDT by the students in their technological stories. The descriptions about the use of these technologies in their social practices suggest a variety of uses as study, communication, and entertainment; but the main use is for educational purposes. In the second part of the analysis, the information was organized into three thematic categories in which we focused the relations established by the students with the ICDT in the classroom. Thus, a good use for the digital technologies in a teaching and learning context means: (a) when the teacher uses the computer/the data show to display images and videos as an aid for the explanations of the curricular content in the classroom; (b) when the students use the computer/the internet to search for information and clarify their doubts about the school subjects on the Internet, mainly in their homes; (c) when the teacher and the students use the digital technologies in the classroom only for the subjects related to the lesson content. The ICDT meanings are expressed in the students' speeches and they present the internalization of the school culture of information transmission by the teacher so that these technologies are used without changing this culture. |
