| Abstract: | Narrative and orality provide support to the contemporary storyteller’s practice, which is permeated by social memory built along the movement of group that preserves and spreads its myths, legends and tales. The context of this investigation is consolidated in face of this narrator’s ability to establish relationships with peers, supporters and audience in physical and virtual settings as he learns to search, retrieve, produce and share information. Thus, grows the need of improving learning about accessing, assessing and using this specific information in his area of expertise. The foregoing issue provides elements to introducing the general purpose which is to identify narrative competency and information literacy that contemporary storytellers already have and those they need for collaborative connection so as to propose a network model to be boosted by information and communication technologies. However, it is believed that digital networks set a challenge to cultural actors in the research universe which has ruled the interpersonal communication mechanisms in the State of Espírito Santo for decades. Carried out within the research group on Information Literacy in the Postgraduate program in Information Science at University of Brasilia, this investigation is a combination of exploratory and descriptive studies. It is a qualitative investigation that sometimes has quantitative features. As far as procedures are concerned, it has features of participative research, since dialoguing and interacting are essential among participants. It is divided into four fully interconnected stages. During the first stage, a theoretical study is carried out through skimming on what has been published by Information Science and relevant areas on subjects such as memory, narrative competency, information literacy, and collaborative networks. During the second one, we map the storytellers' networks and start collecting data in the research field so as to diagnose the competencies of storytellers in the State of Espírito Santo. By administering a questionnaire containing profile and context indicators, we were able to identify abilities addressing the development of narrative practice, production of knowledge and sharing of information in collaborative networks. During the third stage, we added other strategies to the process of identification of storytellers’ competencies, such as interviews based on semistructured questions which, in a flexible way, led the process of observation of narrative competency in storytellers’ field of expertise. The information literacy competency identified throughout the process and the narrative competency observed in work territory led to the fourth stage of this study: the representation of storytellers’ networks in the study and the proposition of planning a collaborative network model that revolves around the narrative practice of storytellers in the State of Espírito Santo. With the results of this doctoral research, we took into account the fact that innovative technologies tend to broaden the connections between storytellers and networks, whether they are centralized, decentralized or distributed. The planning model presented is characterized as an attempt to stimulate the organization of several groups of story tellers (professional, volunteers, etc.) in networks that are more distributed, which does not eliminate centrality in the communication structure. It also involves the relationships of social actors who operate in different areas of information, education and culture, physically and virtually, characterized as a hybrid communication network. Since most study individuals do not participate in networks (physical or virtual) addressing oral narrative, this study aims at fostering bases to access and share information to strengthen narrative competency in hybrid communication network settings. Therefore, the proposition of the network model should stimulate participation of the Espírito Santo storyteller in contexts of search, assessment, and use of narrative information, as well as allow sharing information and production of knowledge in his field of work. The structure of the storytellers’ collaborative network should also include groups of storytellers who have not yet been benefitted from information technology in our information society. |
