| Abstract: | Babassu nuts represent a significant plant extraction resource in Brazil, especially in Maranhão - the largest producing State whose activity is essential for rural populations. The current study aims to: (i) set the spatial-temporal dynamics of babassu nuts production; (ii) estimate the production behavior as well as the prices and trends of babassu nuts in the oil market and (iii) identify the determinants of babassu nuts supply and demand. Hot spot analysis results indicate trends of spatial-temporal concentration of land use activities in Maranhão State. The cold spot appears in all land use categories from the far northwest to the west coast, and it is covered by EPAs in order to protect the lake ecosystems. Since 1992, a second cold spot emerged just for babassu nuts production at the confluence of the western, central and southern regions of the State, thus suggesting babassu extraction vulnerability when it is compared to other land use categories. Coconut and dendê palm cultures as well as palm kernel oil imports were analyzed in order to test their competition with babassu nuts in the oil market and they showed increasing Geometric Growth Rate (GGR) regarding production and decreasing GGR when it comes to price. GGRs for palm oil and coconut oil imports were not significant. GGRs for almond production and prices in Maranhão and for babassu oil exports were not significant, thus suggesting that this market presents certain stability. Two models were generated for babassu supply. Regarding the first model, it held the available data from 1991 to 2012. The determinants that were considered to be significant and that most helped explaining variations in the quantity of supplied babassu nuts were: the State’s headcount of cattle herds; the dependent variable taken with one-year delay; the area planted with temporary crops; the linear trend and the mean price of babassu nuts. As for the second model, it held the available data from 1996 to 2012. The determinants that were considered to be significant and that most helped explaining variations in the quantity of supplied babassu nuts were: the State’s headcount of cattle herds; the mean price of babassu nut; the dependent variable taken with one-year delay; the industrial raw material cost to the chemical industry in Maranhão and the linear trend. The determinants that were considered to be significant and that most helped explaining variations in the quantity of babassu nuts supplied from 1990 to 2012 were: the dependent variable taken with one-year delay; the mean price of babassu nut as well as the mean price of palm oil or dendê oil imports. Supply and demand showed inelastic price elasticity both in the short- and in the long-term. Supply inelasticity suggests the extraction system’s difficulty to meet the increasing demand within the time required by consumers. Demand inelasticity, under the perspective of consumer or of oleochemical industries, indicates that babassu nut price increase also leads to total expenditure increase. According to the producer’s perspective, the price increase would just lead to slight reduction in the demanded quantities. Thus, the total revenue would increase. However, coconut breakers complain about the low price paid for the nuts, thus it does not reflect the theory. Such situation confirms the problematic issue involving other actors in the production chain, such as purchase and transport intermediaries who keep much of the nut commercialization revenues. |
