Abstract:	The images and ideas inhabiting the mindset of the Brazilian and the Portuguese people about Africa and the Africans are the result of an intense process of invetion and appropriation of the diversified and heterogeneous set of forms and meanings used to observe the societies of that continent. They are representations shaped by ingredients inherited from a long and multifaceted tradition and by others produced by the historic experiences and the dialogs established among these Atlantic spaces in the last two centuries. It is certain that a significant part of these images associates Africans to a series of derogatory readings, although there are also efforts made towards the opposite direction. Based on this context, this study aimed at reflecting upon the role played by the teaching of African History in the Brazilian and Portuguese schools, in the attempt of modifying or preserving these images. By analyzing the treatment given to the historic trajectory and to the representations created about the African societies in the History textbooks, this investigation has found an ambiguous picture. Although it signals some changes, it indicates the permanence of a wide range of representations formulated about the issue. Before any other reflection, it demonstrates the absolute need of rethinking the inclusion of this topic in the educational curricula of both countries, as well as the engagement of more Historians devoted to observe Africa and its realities.
